With its picturesque duck pond, village green, 18th-century cottages, ancient High Street and parish church, Chalfont St. Giles is a delightfully traditional English village in the heart of the Chilterns. It may be small, but this cosy community certainly has a lot to offer. Here is our guide on what to eat, see and do in Chalfont St Giles.
Where to Eat in Chalfont St Giles
Recently extended, The Deli is an independent, family-run business offering fresh daily specials and a tantalising array of cakes and pastries. Perfect for a spot of lunch, the deli also opens for a themed evening every Friday and will even cater for private parties. If you’re looking for a great independent eatery with fresh, great quality ingredients, The Deli Chalfont St Giles is truly not to be missed.
You can’t beat a traditional bakery and if you ask us, Stratton is one of the best. Open for more than 30 years, their loaves, soft rolls and baguettes are baked fresh on-site every day while iced buns, cakes and doughnuts fill the bakery’s window. For a working lunch, one of Stratton’s freshly made sandwiches simply cannot be beaten.
If you’re after something to cook at home, then Warners is well worth a visit for some top-quality meat. With classic cuts readily available, Warners also offer a selection of homemade pies as well as a wide range of sausages with some unique flavour combinations. Black pudding and strawberry anyone? Or why not give chicken and apricot a try?
Where to Visit in Chalfont St Giles
As the name suggests, Milton’s Cottage was once home to poet and parliamentarian John Milton, and was where he lived when he completed Paradise Lost. Now open to the public as a museum, it retains its 17th-century charm while housing a collection of books, paintings and prints that give a glimpse into the life of this renowned local writer. Keep your eyes peeled for their eclectic array of events, from apple days where you can make your own juice to Halloween ghost stories and pumpkin poetry.
Chiltern Open Air Museum
It may be somewhat weather dependent, but Chiltern Open Air Museum definitely deserves a place on our list. Opened by volunteers back in 1976, the museum boats almost 40 reconstructed historic buildings that were once lived in or used by our Chilterns ancestors. A fascinating trip for children and adults alike, the museum also holds a number of events throughout the year, from a classic vehicle show to an exhilarating Roman gladiator display. For an experience with a difference, adults can also book into blacksmith, weaving and watercolour workshops.
Captain Cook Monument
Tucked within the grounds of The Vache estate you'll find a striking memorial for Captain Cook, erected by one-time owner Admiral Sir Hugh Palliser. The globe monument sits on a mount surrounded by a moat and is housed by a flint rubble and brick tower. A hidden gem for hikers, access to the estate is only granted to those wishing to see the monument and provides a calm and peaceful spot to enjoy the tranquillity of Chalfont St Giles.
